Making natural gas available in areas far from the distribution grid becomes crucial to facilitate the path to a cleaner world in the transportation and industrial sectors.

The Virtual Pipeline enables compressed natural gas to be made fully available in areas where the distribution grid is absent.

Scotland is an excellent example of environmental protection in the industrial sector, with the conversion of 3 off-grid distilleries to natural gas using the Virtual Pipeline solution.

SAFE has created a versatile and reliable integrated “onload” and “offload” solution that ensures maximum autonomy, capacity, and distribution of compressed natural gas in remote areas 24/7.

Theonload is ensured by the provision of two soundproof and weatherproof Microbox M6 housings, inside which a compression train consisting of a SW series compressor capable of operating over a wide range of suction pressures, coupled with an electric motor with a power rating of 450 kW, has been installed. The compression unit compresses gas from 56 barG to 270 barG, achieving a maximum flow rate of 5820 Sm3/hour.

To ensure full reliability and availability of the solution, the compressor unit was equipped with:

    1. A blow-down system with a capacity of 320 liters and a maximum filling pressure of 68 barG.
    2. A water cooling system located on the compressor skid that cools the gas at each compression stage

To ensure the maximum amount of gas stored inside the tank wagon, we provided a cooling system that reduces the gas temperature downstream of the compression stage.

4 ESPH22 dispensers with electronic head and mass meter ensure the highest accuracy and reliability of refueling.

Offloading at peripheral sites is ensured by the installation of highly versatile SAFE Pressure Reduction Systems – Model 1200 – designed to operate over a wide range of suction pressures (250 to 10 barG): the PRS (Pressure Reduction Systems) reduce pressure in two stages, from 270 to 65 barG and from 65 to 2 barG, respectively, thanks to a system of by-pass valves that allows direct gas flow from the first to the second stage of pressure reduction.
