AN ENERGY CARRIER FOR DECARBONISATION

Hydrogen is an energy carrier, not an energy source: hydrogen is not found as a free molecule in nature (where it is, however, abundant bound to other elements) but it can be produced from different energy sources and then transported, distributed and used in many sectors.

Hydrogen as an energy carrier is a potential tool for accelerating the fight against climate change, not only by boosting the development of renewable energy sources, but also by extending de-carbonisation to sectors that have so far been largely excluded, such as industrial processes and long-distance transport, sectors in which SAFE operates.

The supply of hydrogen to the industrial market is now an important global activity. The demand for hydrogen, which has more than tripled since 1975, continues to increase, reaching about 70 million tons per year (MtH2/yr). Today’s growing interest in hydrogen as a clean energy source is based on these fundamental factors:

  • It can be easily produced on an industrial scale

  • It has a high energy content per unit of mass

  • It is a light, storable, reactive gas

  • Can be used without direct emissions of atmospheric pollutants or greenhouse gases
